Anonymous, Friendly Village
I live at Friendly Village in Anaheim, with a 27-year lease. I am 69 years old, disabled, and have a rare cancer. My Social Security income is $1,130, but my rent is $1,400. Every year in July, my rent goes up by 6% to 9%. I am running out of money, and soon I willl have to leave my home. Mobile home parks have not been affordable for over 40 years!
We need help to keep rent increases low. High rent will make people like me homeless. Instead of building new homes, we need to stop big rent increases. My savings will only last one more year.
Also, the name of the park is “Friendly Village.” Recently when I waved hello to the manager and assistant manager, they looked away and did not wave back. Where is the "friendly" in Friendly Village?
When I returned home later, I thought maybe they were acting this way because they were putting rent increase notices in people’s mailboxes. Any day now, I will get a notice. Rent increases are out of control! The people here are not friendly, so why do I stay?
Why are there no limits on how high rents can go? I spend 100% of my Social Security on rent, plus $300 from my savings each month. I pay for everything else with my savings, but soon I will need help to survive.
These high rent increases are not good for low-income seniors! My roof is leaking, but I cannot find any groups to help me fix it, and I cannot afford a new roof.
God Help Us All!
