Anonymous, Grass Valley
I am a retired nurse, and my husband is very ill. He is on dialysis. Recently, we were contacted by the management of our community because we didn’t get approval for the colors we are using to paint our home. I am struggling to make home improvements, but they are giving me until October 18 to finish repainting the house professionally or face eviction. If I could afford to hire a professional, I wouldn’t have tried doing it myself.
I’m afraid of heights and a bit messy with painting, but I had no idea I needed to get approval for the colors. Many other residents also didn’t know about this rule, and there were no problems until the new management took over.
Before this issue, the manager confronted me at the pool because she thought my music was too loud. I was alone at the pool, listening to old songs, and it wasn’t loud, but she still told me to turn it down. Every time we interact, she is rude, condescending, or threatening.
I even drove three hours to meet with her and the corporate office, but instead of meeting, she came to my back door with maintenance to give me a citation. They pointed out paint drips and an oil stain on the driveway. Ever since I asked her to change my rent slip to reflect my last name for banking purposes, she hasn’t treated me fairly.
She said it would be too much paperwork to make the change and told me just to put my space number.
My husband is African American and volunteers as a broadcaster for public radio and television. When she first insisted on meeting with me, she didn’t show up. This time, when my husband was very sick after dialysis, she came to our door. He hasn’t been well since a sewage spill behind our trailer. This happens often. The first time, I paid a plumber who used a camera to check the pipes and told me the problem was with the main sewer line, meaning the park should be responsible. Other neighbors in my area have the same issues, but maintenance says it’s just our trailer. The plumber also said only a hazmat team should clean the spil , but the park workers used a shop vac and left sewage under the stairwell and in the shed next to our air conditioner. Since then, we have all been sick, and I’m especially worried about my husband, who has sores in his throat and trouble breathing. I was supposed to be on a regular maintenance schedule to prevent this, but it never happened, and this time, they didn’t even clean up.
I am a calm person and only want fair treatment. I have worked hard and paid for all my paint. I only have one wall left and some touch-ups. But now, they are threatening to evict me if I don’t finish.
Another issue is the fire hazard in the area behind my house. The manager says that every year they cut the grass and weeds there, but I’ve been here since 2020, and they never did it. I couldn’t finish it on my own because I had eye surgery and injured my retina pulling weeds. The office didn’t report my work request.
I don’t want to cause trouble. I just want to live out my retirement in peace, without harassment or threats, and to have the health hazards fixed. The manager once took a picture for a magazine to make it look like she treats us fairly, but I’m the only one being harassed and threatened with eviction for a paint job I’m trying to finish. Please help me.
