In March 2020 I bought my house in Rancho Huntington Mobile Home Park and we loved it when we (my daughter, my granddaughter and I) moved in. It was an amazing place to live even though the rent was a little high but I figured that it would probably stay that way for a while as the last mobile home park I lived in only had rental increases every 3 to 4 years but not every year and then it was a manageable amount. Little did I know what was in store for me! Well my daughter had a wonderful job and I was working and lo and behold along came Covid and my daughter lost her job. Then I became disabled with spinal stenosis after a car accident and could no longer work. In 2022 we started having financial problems. Then in order to live here and pay the new rent increases I sold all my jewelry to make one month’s rent, and then I had to sell my car to make another month’s rent. Long story short, after two years I have sold everything I possibly can, sold my burial insurance policy and cashed out my Ira’s, all in order to pay the increasing raises of rent here in the park. I had no idea that there was Covid rental help for people like us and by the time I found out there was a state program that could help with the rent, that program was coming to a close two months after I found out about it. Well I did get two months of my rent paid by the state. Now it has been a struggle every month with finally having to borrow money from friends and borrowing money from my grandsons savings to keep making my rent payments and finally with the last increase of $164 more a month I could not do it on my Social Security and my daughters net monthly income which now totaled the monthly rent! She got her hours cut at her new job and there was no way we could pay our bills, eat, and make rent. I received an eviction notice and had to put my home up for sale. I have until April 17 to get it into escrow or they will lock me out! I tried to work with the corporation that owns this place by paying a month’s rent and then asking if they could take the next month’s rent late and allow me to play catch-up. I was turned down. What I am going through is brutal and horrible and I don’t know what I’m going to do as I need the money from the sale in order to be able to find another home. My daughter just had emergency surgery and has no more sick leave. She was told by the doctor she cannot return to work until the 28th of this month so there’s no way she can pack up this house either and I can’t help her because of my severe spinal stenosis and neuropathy which keeps me in constant pain. I thought that when I moved here this would be where I would spend the rest of my life and my daughter would also have a place after I die but this is not going to be true as the huge rental increases don’t allow for that.
When the monthly rent with utilities is more than the total monthly net income of the breadwinner then this is an impossible situation. My social security and small pension barely feeds the 3 of us and helps make the car payment, car insurance, dr and dental bills and household expenses. There is nothing left over for other bills that have to be paid such as gasoline, car repairs and other normal expenses. We are grossly negative financially every month. My space rent is more than my former house payment and this is not OK for a senior citizen.
I know nothing can be done about my situation but it’s just probably reflective of many of us in mobile home parks who get hit by these huge yearly increases that make it impossible for us to keep paying the space rent.

Chris, the manager, told me today that you were asking about me and I found out today that if I do not pay the back rent that is due the park the corporation will take my house by 6 o’clock tomorrow evening. So I’ve had to figure out how to do that and I’m still working on it as it’s over $12,000! Now isn’t that awful for 6 months space rent? Almost unheard of for a mobile home park but that’s what it is and when we moved here I had no idea that they would be raising the rent every single year as it’s just nuts. Shortly after we moved here my daughter lost her job because of Covid and then at the beginning of January my daughter’s hours were cut from 40 a week to 27 so we have been absolutely struggling.
But here’s the thing, they can take your house if you don’t pay and they do not allow the resident to sell if they are behind in rent!! That’s crazy. So once the 60 days past due rent is up if you have not sold your home, and it’s not in escrow, then they legally can take your home and sell it themselves.
This is the disgusting situation here in our park and in others. Because the space rents are so terribly high we cannot sell our homes and the corporation knows this and that’s why they keep raising the rent because they can make a lot of profit over the sale of an homeowner's property.
It’s inhuman and horribly corrupt. But this is the way of the world right now.
So if I cannot come up with the back rent by 6:00 pm, they will lock me out. My daughter just went back to work today after having emergency surgery with complications a month ago. We have been living on my measly social security money lately which doesn’t go far. But now I will lose my home since it didn’t sell in the allotted time given to me by the park and its corrupt owners. Horrible, just horrible doing this to a disabled senior. As I told you before, I have sold my car to pay the rent here, sold my gold and all my diamonds and my mothers jewelry to pay the rent, cashed out my IRA’s to pay the rent, and borrowed from my grandson to pay the rent as this place has just drained me dry. I have severe spinal stenosis and leaky heart valves. I’m extremely tired and this has been such a terrible time for my daughter and myself. But God willing, he will find a way for us. I truly believe that God holds us all in the palm of His very capable hands. I am trying to borrow money so I can retain ownership of my home. Please keep fighting for all the residents who don’t deserve this.

Hi there. There is an update on my home. I’m sending these emails to you so that you can share them with the coalition and help others that find themselves backed into a corner like I’ve been and not knowing what the ramifications would be if they had their house for sale and you couldn’t come up with the rent. They gave me until 6 o’clock yesterday evening to come up with over $12,000 or they were going to come and lock me out of my house and take possession of my home even though it was up for sale they don’t care they knew they would get their money
when the house was sold so I’m not sure what the push was to kick me out. So I borrowed the money and paid the corporation but that wasn’t even good enough for them. They said they will let me stay but only if I sell this house quickly. When I moved here I had no idea that a corporation owned this mobile home park. I have lived in another mobile home park and my parents managed one for years and never have I seen this type of behavior or this type of non-caring for seniors. It’s very difficult to sell my little place here because the space rent is just as high as it is for someone that has a bigger lot and a bigger house. So it just doesn’t seem fair. I cannot get my two cars in the driveway. Only one fits and that’s another problem with this tiny space. There is no allowances or grace given to any seniors in this park, none whatsoever.
It's definitely “profit over people” and that’s very sad because I thought this is where I would end up staying the rest of my days on this planet. Home ownership does not give you any security at Rancho Huntington. I now have to pay $3000 interest on the money I borrowed to pay the back rent. And by the time I finally sell this place I will probably make very little from the sale. I was told if I do not get it sold soon the park will take possession and lock me out. It doesn't matter that my rent is paid up, they will still do this. I'm not sure where I stand legally and I have consulted an attorney about it. I truly hope that no one else has to go through what I have gone through these last couple of years and living here with the rent increases because our income has decreased and the rent keeps going up. Right now I am paying almost $3000 a month to live here with the rent and utilities.
