Linda Blumenthal, Skyline MHP
I am a widowed, 75 year old, retired woman. After many discussions, a lot of research and fine-tuning my Social Security, IRA and investment portfolio, my financial planner and I agreed that purchasing a home in the Skyline Mobile Home Park would be a good way (the only way) to move back to Southern California from Reno, Nevada.
The one thing we did not plan for was a predatory investor buying the park.
That disastrous event blew my hard earned portfolio out of the water. I went into escrow with a mutually agreed to $1,118.89 monthly lot fee (well within my budget). As of January 1, 2024, my Base Rent will be $2,259.07 (doubled). My Social Security is $2,501.00/mo. After my initial lot fee increase of 65%, I, like my fellow residents, have suffered additional increases amounting to 20%.
Many of our residents, having been retired for many years, have far less in their life savings and Social Security benefits than I. The anxiety within the Park is palpable. No social event is complete without ending with a discussion of rising lot fee costs. Anxiety is especially toxic to elders who are already compromised by aging and the challenges that accompany the aging process.
Our “forever” plans have been and continue to be savagely threatened by a predatory investor, who has no interest in our community.
We REALLY need your support and backing in order to save our homes. Homelessness is a devastating issue in our State and, indeed, the nation. And yet, the elderly, the disabled and low income residents are being targeted by planned, predatory investors.
If our Parks are not protected there will be tens of thousands of currently housed, California residents joining the homeless already straining California coffers. When people, especially the elderly, are priced out of their homes it has dire consequences, including death.
Losing a home includes losing social connections, support networks, self-determination and self-esteem. Losing a home impacts anyone’s, especially elders, physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
The community ? loses accumulated wisdom, community volunteers and, yes, a strong, reliable tax base. Please support our fight to save our homes; to save affordable housing; to maintain existing communities for all residents, regardless of income level, disability or age; single or married.
Affordable housing is a Human Right, guaranteed by our living Constitution - “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
